For nearly 200 years, this was the 'Horse and Jockey'inn.Its address in the 18th century was given as 'Bow Street'- the name given to houses on this stretch of the upper High street. It closed in the mid 1990's. It was remarkable because it was run by one family- the Browns, for nearly 50 years. William Brown was the landlord in 1881. By the 1891 census, he had died and his widow, then aged 51, took over the licence an still had 6 children to bring up. She was still the licencee in 1917. By 1927, she had been replaced by Fred Bayley, formerly landlord of the Black Lion Prior to the closure of the Albion in 2018, it was the last pub toclose in Wem. |
