What is now the Wem Bookshop was for a long time, a grocer and bakers shop. William Ridgway appears in the 1881 census aged 29 as a grocer and baker. He died early in the 20th century, but his widow, Emma, took over the shop and was still trading in 1927. In 1937, Edge Brothers had taken over, also as Grocers and Bakers. John Lewis ran it as a hardware and antiques shop for a time before moving to the shop across the road from the church ). He then took over from Kynastons for a few years before selling to Kings. The shop can be seen in the old photograph with a Signboard of "Antiques & Paraphernalia" on it. The picture is dated in the mid 1970s and is part of a collection in Shropshire Archives, with whose permission it is reproduced.

At one time, there were 2 Ridgway Bakery shops. Above is a pho of the other one at 77.
