Market Street looking from the High St.

Market Street only acquired its name in the mid 18th Century. Prior to that, the name was given to the length of the High Street between the Market Hall (now the Church Hall) and the entrance to Chapel Street. This alley was known as New Cripple Street. That had replaced 'Old Cripple Street' which was the area to the west of the Castle Mound bend.
There appear to have been few actual shops in the new Market Street. In 1930, Eckfords, the Sweet Pea specialists, had a seed store at Nos 7 and 10 and No 9 was the Baptist Church (now redeveloped as flats) The exception was Number 3, which was a licenced premises- firstly as a pub and then as a part off-licence until it was redeveloped. No trace of the former building remains.
