The 3rd Battalion took part in the Normandy campaign and Operation Market Garden (1944).
The Irish Guards led the vanguard of XXX Corps in the advance towards Arnhem (Market Garden).
10 September, the 2nd and 3rd Battalions of the Irish Guards managed to take a bridge over the Maas-Schelde canal.
17 September, they were part of the 5th Brigade of the Guards Armoured Division - very heavy fighting with the Germans.
The Irish Guards lost 60 men during the breakout (20 killed and 40 wounded).
18 September, the advance to Eindhoven continued.
21 September, north of Nijmegen the Irish Guards were stopped by antitank guns which prevented any attempt to move forward.
