Wem Church Hall
The current Church Hall began life as a market hall.Built in the early 19th. century, it is constructed of red brick with a slate hipped roof. There are four ground floor bays, which used to be open when it served as a market, but have now been blocked up. In 1934, Norman Stanley Duckett had a butchers shop in the premises as did Alfred Turner, the pork butcher and Smiths, also pork butchers.
The town Post Office was once in the building, as was the town clerk's office at least up to 1880.The 1870 census refers to the family of John Wright the Town curator living on the premises.
Alice Smith of Smith of Smiths pork butchers was interviewed for the Wemiam, and her account can be read by clicking here.
