Nos 11-13 were a long-established shops which were redeveloped as a Co-op superette in the 1970s.How anyone managed to put a building so badly designed in its context is only answerable by 1950s planners. When the new Coop Store moved to the main car-park, they retained the premises. The front windows provide Co-op advertising on the High street, while the premises are used for light. Note the zebra crossing which appears to have no reason. It actually used to be in front of a passage-way through to the cattle market. This was blocked off when the site was redeveloped. industry.
Memories
In 1954, Colin Wright had the shop selling groceries and paraffin. One resident remembers 'My mother sent me as a 9 year old child in 1954 to get things for her. I was always a bit frightened if Mr Wright served me as he had white hair and a white moustache and always seemed a bit grumpy. Mrs Wright was young, blonde and very smart' Wright's advert is shown here. He moved from the Union Buildings which were demolished in 1941. so must have moved there after WW2.
